To the north and to the south of Burgas there are salt lakes, which are protected areas as they are a part of the route of migrating birds. In spring and summer, ibis and kingfishers can be seen while everyone awaits the arrival of the pink pelicans.

In autumn, the skies are dark with thousands of eagles, and buzzards while at the same time, flocks of white and black storks hover over Atanasssovo Lake. In winter the lakes are the preserves of ducks, geese, cormorants and curly-headed pelicans.
Burgas is the second-largest city on the Bulgarian coast and Burgas International Airport is the connecting point for the resorts of Sunny Beach, Nessebar and Sozopol.

The climate is of the moderate continental type with a definite influence of the sea. Summer is pleasantly fresh because of the constant movements of the air and the average day temperature during the summer is 26.4° C. There are between 24 and 27 sunny days per month during the summer and the winter is mild with no snow.

Burgas is the principal port of the Black Sea Coast and is a vibrant, bustling city throughout the year, but away from the busy centre of the city, the shady Sea Garden is a lovely place to stroll in hot summer days. The park is situated on a hill next to the coast, and is rich in flowers, trees and sculptures.

Within the park there is a casino, a small zoo and an open-air theatre, which houses the annual International Folklore Festival, and where participants in the Golden Orpheus Pop-Festival perform.

A beautiful forked staircase in verdure leads from the park down to the central beach of the city. The sand is a mixture of various alloys of magnetite, which is the reason for its dark colour.
