![]() It is an endearingly sleepy little town which is poised to boom as the ‘Super Borovets Project’ gets underway. The town sprang up as an iron mining centre in the 14th Century and gained fame in the 19th Century for the Samokov School of Icon Painting and Wood Carving. |

Although the outskirts still retain an industrial air, the centre of town is picturesque and welcoming. There are numerous places of historical interest to visit in Samokov including the beautiful Bairakli Mosque to the north. The Samokov History Museum contains archaeological and ethnographical displays, scale models of iron forges and furnaces and photographs of the old town. |

The Sarafka Kashta Museum is a delightful National revival house containing traditional furniture and relics and perfectly evokes the atmosphere of the town. Samokov is perfectly placed for access to the nearby ski resort of Borovets and the stunning Lake Iskar region. |
