Varna is called the sea capital of Bulgaria, because it is the biggest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast. Varna is also the base of the Bulgarian Navy. The archaeological museum contains some of the finds from the so-called "Gold of Varna", which are the oldest gold treasures in the world. |

Varna is a city over 11 km long, its width, including the new residential quarters is nearly 9 km. The city is like an amphitheatre and follows the curves of the Bay of Varna. Varna’s history can be traced back for thousand years. It was inhabited by an ancient Thracian tribe in a small fishermen's settlement. The city was founded as an ancient Greek trading colony in about 580 BC then control changed from Byzantine to Bulgarian numerous times during the Middle Ages, and eventually was captured by the Ottoman Empire in 1393. |
