The municipality of VIDIN is located in the northwestern part of the Danubian Plain and the city of Vidin, at the bank of the Danube, is the municipal capital. Its territory coincides with the Vidin Lowland, between the bend of the Danube at Vidin and the hills to the southwest.

The town is situated 199 km north-west of
Sofia on the right bank of Danube. It is linked with Kalafat town in Romania by a daily ferry service and, with EU funding, in 2007 work will begin on a new road bridge link between the two countries at Vidin.

The city has become increasingly popular as a tourist resort due to its abundance of fresh mineral water springs and its wonderful culture, history and architecture.

Some sites have been preserved, like the Baba Vida fortress, built in the 9th-10th centuries on the ruins of a Roman fortress (rebuilt many times with its present appearance dating back to the 18th C.), the Turkish Konak, the mosque and library of Osman Nuri Pasha, the cruciform barracks of 1798, and several old Renaissance buildings.

Vidin is one of the oldest towns along the Bulgarian Danube bank and is a starting point for excursions along the river. It appears on maps as the Roman fortress of Bononia on the foundations of a Thracian settlement.

During the First Bulgarian Kingdom it is known as Budin (Bdin) Bishop's centre. During the Second Bulgarian Kingdom it is a strong fortress and after 1371 a capital of the Vidin Kingdom under Tsar Ivan Sratsimir.

The Fortress of Belogradchik is an impressive architectural-constructional and historical monument of the culture and is situated in the south of Vidin between Peak Kom and Peak Vrushka Chuka.

The slender silhouette of the fortress fits perfectly in the space surrounded by the reddish rock massifs dominating over Belogradchik.

The unique rocks of Belogradchik were molded by nature over 200 millions of years.
